Looking for an easy, yet delicious Sunday night meal while you are travelling. Then check out my French Provincial Vegetables and Mussels Recipe. Although it is French-inspired, you can pick up these ingredients all over the world and many different markets.  Markets! I can’t rave enough about markets, about the …

An Easy Breakfast Steak Sandwich on Portugese Bread

A big part of travel is about eating like the locals, trying out new dishes and flavours at different times of the day. A Portuguese breakfast steak sandwich has fast become one of my favourite foods. Every culture has a different breakfast food… every region in fact. Choosing what to …

Improvised Festive Avocado Salsa with Tostada’s

Sometimes you just want to stay in your hostel, eat dinner, chill out and go to bed by 9 pm. However, if your hostel doesn’t have a kitchen this isn’t always possible. You end up going out for dinner often with new hostel friends, your quiet night can quickly turn …

Healthy Mexican Steak with Veg Salsa – on a camping stove

Cooking in hostels is always a challenge. Cooking something healthy and delicious is even more of a challenge… one might even call it an experiment. You have to deal with limited utensils, stoves that either burn too hot or not at all, lack of spices and oil and other people …

Lime and Chilli Chicken Salad

I am chilling out on the Mexican island of Cozumel in order to complete my open water PADI diving course… as you do. Cozumel is a relaxed place with the whole island revolving around the scuba diving trade – which is obviously why I am here. Most people visit the island …

From Pintxos to a Basque Style Chorizo Stew – San Sebastian has it all

As I wander through the old town in San Sebastian, all of my senses are pleasantly confronted by food. First, it is the sight of the cobbled streets – so different from anything we have back home in modern Sydney. Then its the sound of glass chinking, old friends greeting …

A Backpackers Blackberry Breakfast Bruschetta Recipe

I have escaped London to the country and it is amazing! Autumn is probably my favourite time of year to disappear for a few weeks of rambling through fields. Not only are the trees all changing colour giving it a glorious Van Gough feel but the autumn fruits and vegetables …

A Country Beetroot and Egg Breakfast Bruschetta Recipe

Autumn is a great time to escape to the country, especially if you have just done a summer backpacking around Europe.  Maybe you have a great tan with a beer belly to match, or maybe you are worn out from seeing so many museums, churches and piazzas. If so a …

An English Farmers Market Frittata

Wet weather, warm beer, crowded streets and bad food are what most people expect when they head off on an English adventure. The first three may still be true but ‘bad food’ definitely isn’t. England has gone through a culinary revolution since the eighties thanks to likes of Rick Stein, Jamie …

Singapore Stir-Fry: a Cheap Hostel Meal

Cooking in hostels isn’t always easy but it is always worth it! In Singapore, we stayed at the Green Kiwi Backpackers in Bugis.  Which was only a short walk from Little India home of massive fresh food and wet market. Lingo: Wet Market, is where people kill (usually) and butcher …

About the Lite Backpacker

Hello, I’m Helen, AKA The Lite Backpacker – an Australian with an English accent (thanks to having one English parent) on the 30 side of my 20s. Like so many Australians, at 18 I packed up my backpack and headed to Europe, flittering from museum to bar for nearly a year. When I came home I thought I had gotten the “travel bug” out of my system as well as putting on an unhealthy amount of “backpacking weight”. Instead, within 6 months I had booked my next trip, with a vow of finding a way to enjoy travel food without the weight gain. Read More about “About Me”…
